Developmental Editing

We'll focus on the big picture: how your ideas are organized, how clearly your arguments come across, and how effectively your writing engages readers. Rather than fussing over commas, we'll refine structure, flow, and clarity so your work communicates its full impact.

Copyediting

This is where I'll clean up sentences, smooth out wordiness, and make sure your tone, style, and citations all line up. Think of it as giving your draft a sharp haircut and a fresh outfit—polished, consistent, and ready to impress.

Proofreading

This is the final polish for your finished work. It's the typos hunt, the stray comma chase, the double-check that everything is spotless before your amazing work goes out into the world. It’s not glamorous, but it’s the difference between looking put-together and showing up with spinach in your teeth. When I'm done, your document will be publication-ready.

Stylistic Editing

This is where your writing gets its glow-up. I smooth out clunky sentences, untangle jargon, and make sure your ideas flow so readers stay with you from start to finish. Think of it as fine-tuning your voice—clear, confident, and compelling—without losing what makes it uniquely yours. When I’m done, your work won’t just be correct, it’ll announce itself like Penelope Featherington at Lady Danbury's ball.

Academic/Technical Editing

Your research is done, and now I help you refine how it’s communicated. For theses, articles, and monographs, that means clear, precise copyediting and stylistic editing—not conducting research. For technical and professional reports, I balance specialized terminology with plain language principles, ensuring complex ideas reach both expert and non-specialist readers.

How We'll Work Together

  1. Get in touch using the contact form or via email to describe your editing needs.
  2. Send me a writing sample. Writing samples enable me to evaluate the type and intensity of editing your project needs. Samples are typically 5–10 pages long. If you are writing a full-length book, please send representative pages from at least two chapters of your work.
  3. I will perform a free sample edit on your writing sample at the level of editing requested (e.g., copy-editing versus manuscript evaluation).
  4. Your writing sample will also be used to estimate my editing fees. I will send you a cost estimate within seven days of receiving your sample.
  5. If you accept the estimate, I will prepare an editing contract, which specifies the agreed scope of the work using guidelines from Editors Canada. An editing contract specifies the agreed-upon editing activities, fees to be charged, delivery dates, and other details of our working relationship.
  6. Sign the contract electronically and return it to me, along with the most recent version of your project.
  7. Before work begins, pay the agreed-upon deposit, which is typically 25% of the final cost of editing.
  8. Finally, I’ll deliver your edited manuscript and any agreed-upon reports and critiques. The balance of my fee should be paid within 30 days of project delivery.

Please Note:  I do not edit manuscripts created with AI tools such as ChatGPT. At this time, there are too many unresolved technical, legal, and ethical concerns with AI-generated writing for me to accept this work.

How Much Does All This Cost?

Editing costs vary depending on the level of work your manuscript needs. Light copyedits are less costly than heavy or structural edits, and academic/technical projects depend on their complexity and the amount of collaboration required. My rates follow the Editorial Freelancers Association’s median schedule (in Canadian dollars) and are updated periodically. Optional extras are billed separately, and Zoom/phone meetings are available at CAD $75/hour.
